Robbie Williams - Take The Crown

Robbie Williams - Take The Crown ROOOAAARRR Edition

Introduction

The British popstar Robbie Williams had just released his 9th studio album Take The Crown. Alternating his solo carrier with some small comebacks in his famous group Take That, Robbie is trying to get back on top of the charts with each release. Three years after his latest studio album Reality Killed the Video Star, we are now going to see what Mr Robbie decided for his new come back. Here we go. Take The Crown.

Track by Track

Timid and slow introduction with Be a Boy, typical sound of Robbie's previous albums, melancholic sounds of saxophones which go along with lyrics about the hopes and fears of growing up. Nothing epic to enter the album but this is something Robbie's fan will like it.

The following track Gospel hints that this is going to be a very cohesive album with a sound that reminds of Robbie's Intensive Care album. A bit more energy compared to the previous song. Absolutely better, yet again some feeling of sadness is clear in the air. Good song indeed.

And here we go with a funny and catchy song, his first single off this album Candy. This is song is everything Robbie is about: energy,  very familiar chorus that stays in your mind from the very first listening. The lyrics are interesting in their apparent lightness. Overall a great single choice. He is definitely going back to some old stuff of his. Good Robbie!

If there is one this he can really do, that is choosing his single material. From the very start of Different you can immediately feel the greatness of this song. A song about the promise of being different, second chances and love. Bittersweet but absolutely amazing track. Something to watch out on the charts in the following months. We said it: amazing.

Oh, cheeky title on the next track Shit on the Radio. And he actually repeats it a lot. Are you mad at somebody, Robbie? Funny fact: apparently he was banned from Radio 2 in the UK for being "too old". Who wouldn't be pissed off? In that case, shout it, Robbie! It's not a great song by the way.
Nice guitars with All That I Want which do not lead into an explosive massive loud chorus I was expecting but hey, this is not bad at all. But yeah, a better chorus would have helped.

Slowing back the mood with Hunting For You Robbie gives us another of his down tempo ballad. Nice lyrics. Maybe not single material but nice album track.

The instrumental intro of Into the Silence is suggesting we are going to listen to all the things we have just missed in the previous track. Another slow track, but this time, an amazing one. Now this is definitely single material. The sound is perfect, his lower register shines. The tone goes up with the second chorus. Too compliments, right? Ok, let's be bitchy and say that at 3:01 his voice gets too raspy for one second. This is all the negative I can say about this track. Wow. Release this, Robbie.

Can't find the right words to express my face after this sudden change in the music. After spending lines and lines about a great song, we find Hey Wow Yeah Yeah. Now, what do you expect from this title? "boy boy boy clap your hands yeah yeah wow wow". Don't even try to hold back the tears, guys. This is nonsense, seriously. But who doesn't love nonsense songs? We do. Amazing in its awfulness. Thanks Robbie.

Back to the mental sanity, Not Like the Others is a very nice song with a faster rhythm and very nice and naughty lyrics. Oh Robbie, you don't need to tell us how dirty you can be, we know it and we love it.  Good tune!

Final track Losers is a duet with Lissie. Who is she? Should I google her? Ok, wikipedia says that she's a kind of country-folk star. I believe in Wikipedia and that explains the sound of the song. I wasn't expecting this, a duet and a country-ish song. I am the last country music fan. But this is a nice ending for the album, it's a very strong duet, this Lissie knows her singing pretty good. Nice surprise, Robbie. Perfect end.

The Verdict

The remembrances of his previous sounds are undeniable now. This is absolutely a sequel to the Escapology-Intensive Care line. Very enjoyable album with some fun and bittersweet moments. The only thing that concerns me is seeing him promoting this album. Let's face it: his recent live performances of the first single Candy weren't amazing. He is one of the funniest guy on the camera, he can joke and put everything a side for the sake of the show. He enjoys the stage but he is not on top of his vocal abilities. That's why they still do studio albums. And this is a very good one and it is going to do very well, I am sure of it. Having said that, this is something you all should give a listen to. Very mature but don't say old!

Highlights: Candy, Different. Into The Silence, Hey Wow Yeah Yeah
