Delta Goodrem - Child Of The Universe

Introduction.
After a waiting of almost 5 years, the new album of Australian popstar and “The Voice” judge Delta Goodrem has been released on the 26th October. “Child of the universe” is the end of a long recording and producing process but after several delays (the album was expected in late 2010, then in 2011), it saw the light, and it represents the natural evolution of Delta’s sound. The debut album “Innocent Eyes”, with more than 1.200.000 copies sold in Australia and 15xPlatinum certifications, consecrated Delta as one of the most talented and famous pop voices in Australia. Her music has always been really enjoyable, pop, sometimes even with seasoned with “country” moods, always accompanied by her beautiful and powerful voice and her piano. During her musical career, Delta slowly left the “girl next door” songs and went through a slow but constant “modernization” process, making Delta slowly exploring more mature sounds, themes and tones.

Track by track.
The opening of the album is the title-track, Child of the universe. A nice up-tempo song, with a fast tempo, which lyric are mixed with fragility and strength, it’s something I’ve always loved in Delta’s songs. The following track is Touch. It’s a lovely song, also an up-tempo, with beautiful lyrics about the past and memories of Delta’s childhood, we can call it the Innocent eyes of Child of the universe. The rhythm suddenly drops with the following track Wish you were here a classic ballad which was written by Delta after the death of a close friend of her. This song has, further than the piano line, also a beautiful violin background that makes it differ from the classic Delta’s slow songs, that accompanies in an exquisite way the melancholic mood of the lyrics.

Track number four is Knocked out, an up-tempo song accompanied with a guitar melody, recalling other old songs like A little too late. The strength and the determination of the lyrics, find a nice continue into the fifth track the more optimistic, solar and self-confident first single Sitting on top of the world, almost an hymn to the joy of living. As it often happens, these feelings are blown away by the following song, a pure ballad called I’m not ready in which Delta tries to find the strength to say goodbye to her lover. The seventh track of the album is quite interesting. In Hunters and the Wolves Delta deals with the animal instinct, with fear and pain (we could consider it the new Bare Hands, even if it’s less electronic). The rhythm is haunting, and this is one of the songs, of which Mistaken identity is the foremost, in which Delta distances to the common image of her as the good and pure girl next door. After she abandoned herself to the wild side, we found the second single of the album, Dancing with a broken heart in a version which differs from the one released, which I prefer. This version is less split, more fluent and continuous, maybe it intertwines better in the architecture of the album. This is an “electropop” try, but without excess, in Delta’s style.

The following track is Hypnotized, a song with a rushing and joyful tempo, with “oh-oh-uh-oh-oh”. Delta shows a lighter and uncontrolled version of love. Nice pop try. “Safe to Believe” is a ballad, co-written with her former boyfriend, the teen pop idol Nick Jonas. The result is a slow, soft ballad, in which Delta is able to express completely the power of her voice, (she also whistles the last chorus!) singing about how beautiful is leaning to love. Track number eleven is Speed of life. The theme of this downtempo song is the shortness of our existence, how hard is to make a decision and how easy is to make mistakes. This is one of my favourite moments of the album, this is a Delta song in perfect style: breathtaking voice, nice rhythm, beautiful lyrics. That’s all. War On Love follows. Nice song, Delta tries to resist to the pain caused by love, resisting in the hope of better times and with strong faith in her relationships. The use of the military drum taking the rhythm is a nice try to make the listener closer to the battlefield mood of the song. Another good one, Delta.

I Lost All My Love 4 you (Delta, you are an adult, please…next time use “FOR”, I beg you.) is a simple song, drum, piano, a few violins sometimes, lyrics about losing the love for someone. Nice, nothing more. You could have done better this time Delta. When my stars come out instead is an enjoyable track, co-written with Livvi Franc (ok, most of you will say “Who?!”…give a listen to the few singles she released, if you are an “electropop” lover you won’t be disappointed!). The mood of the song is almost “black”, inspite of that, Delta’s voice perfectly fits to it. A song about determination and not giving up, enjoyable and almost dancey. Rare thing, we appreciate the effort! The closing of the album is a downtempo song Control. This is absolutely my favourite track of the whole album. The dark mood, the pain of the song vibrates into Delta words. These is one of the case in which Delta voice is not only wonderful, but is able to tell a story, a story about suffer, about weakness and the strength to take back all the love that was given away for nothing. I love it. Thank you Delta.

The standard edition of the album ends here. I want to spend two words with the two I-Tunes bonus tracks of the album, Alcohol and No communication. It’s such a shame these tracks didn’t make it to the original version of the album, I found them really beautiful. The first is a song full of toxicity and rage, (check Nobody Listened, the ghost track of Delta’s second album “Mistaken Identity” to have another taste of the angry Delta) an attack to how the alcoholism can destroy and change a man. Actual theme, beautiful interpretation. A very good job. The second one  No communication, starts with a weird tribal rhythm, the songs slowly evolves into a very nice uptempo song, in which you can hear Delta trying to call out for her lover, but without any chance to success. Amazing pop song, has been stuck in my head for more than a week.

The Verdict.
I really enjoyed this album, I found it complete, well written and produced. Delta’s voice is always amazing and her personality is slowly evolving, but always making good music. Good job Delta!
Good moments: Sitting on top of the world, Speed of Life, Control, Alcohol, No Communication.

4/5.
