Songs That Should Have Been Hits (Part 1)

The history of music is littered with songs and albums that should have been bigger hits. Songs we love that frustrate us that they have never reached a wider audience thus proving the music buying public are fools. There are entire artists that should have been more famous. Here, in an occasional series are 5 such songs that should have been far bigger hits than they were.

In Love With Love (PWL remix) - Debbie Harry

During a time when she was still Debbie Harry (1987) this was the follow up to her global hit French Kissin' In The USA. Her second solo single that only reached number 45 in the UK charts. In the UK it was produced and remixed by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, thus this the PWL remix. It Deborah Harry, it's S/A/W, it's a fantastic pop track. It should have been a hit!

I'm Not Mad - Alex Gardner

In 2010 Robert Pattinson lookalike should have been the next big thing in pop. His debut single was even produced by Xenomania. Digital Spy loved him. He was Scottish (still is I assume having been born in Edinburgh), a bit cute and wrote his own material. This got to number 44 in the UK charts. This is sophisticated, electro-synth pop. It should have been a hit!

If I Have To Stand Alone - Lonnie Gordon

People will assume that Philadelphia native Lonnie Gordon was a one hit wonder on the strength of her biggest hit, Happenin' All Over Again in 1990. Having been "big in the clubs" in the late 80's she joined the S/A/W stable and finally received chart success. This her third single stalled at number 68 in the UK charts. It's failure meant that her debut album was never even released and Lonnie went back to being "big in the clubs". This should have been a hit, mainly for the lyric "get out of my life or be committed to me" if nothing else.

Nova - The Sound of Arrows

Nova are the sort of group Popjustice adore. They're Swedish. They remix tracks for Lady Gaga and Alphabeat. Their songs are loved by advertisers world wide. This is their debut song from 2011. This is dream like Scandi synth pop of exceptional quality. It never even charted in the top 200 in the UK. This should have been a hit.

Highrise Town - The Lanterns

The Lanterns are sisters from Edinburgh. In 1999 this atmospheric, haunting, slightly unnerving pop epic was released. They were remixed by Todd Terry. They featured on Channel 4. They should have been the next big thing. This scrapped into the UK charts at number 40. This should have been a hit.
