[SPECIAL] Eurovision Song Contest 2014

Hello hello everyone!

One week after the finals and everybody is still talking about the 59th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest!

Discussed all over Europe and the entire world for its unconventional winner Conchita Wurst who represented Austria with the James Bond ballad Rise Like a Phoenix. The reason of the controversy is pretty simple: Conchita is a drag-queen character with a beard! You can just imagine all the talking that the eastern homophobes have been doing since her appearance on the list! Well, not enough to prevent Europe to crown her winner of the Eurovision Song Contest! Take that!

Well, let's get back to the music. As all Eurovision fans know, there is always a wide selection of songs that are not exactly the finest effort in Europe, but that is also part of the beauty of this show, I suppose. Here are the song that PopstonesHeroes have selected to enter in the Eurovision Song Contest memories book:

1. The Common Linnets - Calm After the Storm (The Netherlands)

We are very very happy about the winning song BUT this song has been the biggest surprise (well, a pleasant one) in terms of musical quality. A country duet with perfect vocals, simple and humble performance by two solo singers teamed up for the occasion. The results was incredibly successful earning the the second place in the final ranking (although some people find them boring, Europe is not that pleased with country music). Yet again, a performance and a song that deserved to be remembered! Very soft, calm (indeed), sweet and they looked AMAZING. Well done!

2. Softengine - Something Better (Finland)

Now we start going against the popular vote. Finland sent a very young pop/rock band called Softengine with a song called Something Better. The live performance didn't deserve a high rank but the song itself is rather good, we have to say. It is something we would imagine (and maybe hope) from the British band Lawson. High energy, a bit of falsetto and not bad lyrics. In theory this could have smashed but the age of the band might have compromised the results too much. Yet, definitely worth a place in out playlists!

3. Molly - Children of the Universe (United Kingdom)

Every year the UK complains that their song is not appreciated or the "right one" for Eurovision. This time, despite the results, they have sent a pretty awesome song. Children of the Universe is a powerful ballad sung by a less known singer called Molly. The opening "power to the people" is somehow catchy and stayed in our head for quiet a while. Who cares about the final results when you can be proud of a song like this? UK is OK (ahah, no political jokes intended)

4. Conchita Wurst - Rise Like a Phoenix (Austria)

No introductions necessary. She is the winner on so many levels that is pointless to even try to complain or criticise the results: Conchita Wurst with Rise like a Phoenix. In perfect style for a James Bond movie: vocals on top, attitude that even Leona Lewis could never. No better winner for Eurovision. Well done Europe! "We are unstoppable" she said. Priceless.

5. Sanna Nielsen - Undo (Sweden)

Sweden is one of those countries who take Eurovision VERY seriously! And they always provide that good dose of EuroPop that we love! This year is the time for a Celine Dion-ish ballad Undo. Once again, not the best live performance but the song was actually very nice and enjoyable. Not surprised we won't go back to Sweden next year (Sweden won Eurovision in 2012 with Euphoria) which is ok. Keep sending great songs though, ok? Thanks!

6. Mariya Yaremchuk - Tick Tock (Ukraine)

Back to some bubblegum pop! Hold your tears back cause the lyrics to this song are so deep you could drown! "My hear is like a clock and steady like a rock" just to mention a few. The peformance and the song were very pleasant and relaxed. And we all noticed THAT hamster. So no more words, just sing and dance to Tick Tock

7. Emma Marrone - La mia città (Italy)

Let's finish with the Italian act. She comes from the reality world and in Italy she is one of those "love her or hate her" singers. Her personality is really hard to love, but the song was actually quiet nice and the live performance was not too bad. Another rock-ish song together with the Finnish band, it was a nice change for the Eurovision feeling. Yet again, not enough to impress anyone! The song finished in the 21st position (or there about, too lazy to check wiki, sorry) which is one of the worst for Italy in their history in Eurovision. Yet again, give it a try, ok? We swear is not THAT bad! Ok? Good!

Well. That's it. You have all you need to put this Eurovision Song Contest in your memories.
But just don't forget who came (and won) in the past:

Elena Paparizou - My Number One - Greece. ESC 2005 Winner
Amazing.
